What is an EAP and how does it work?

The employee assistance program (EAP) is a confidential counselling service that provides employees and their immediate families the opportunity to speak to an experienced psychologist around difficulties that affect their well-being, work performance or enjoyment of the workplace.

The counselling is short-term, solution focused and looks at practical strategies for dealing with concerns in a supportive and non-judgemental environment. Sessions are informal, friendly and focused on boosting an individual’s wellbeing and mental health resilience.

What issues are covered by an EAP?

Your team is made up of a diverse bunch of people with their own unique needs and challenges. Our EAP service is designed to be flexible and responsive by providing professional services for a range of issues, whether they be directly work-related or not.

Examples include:

Personal

  • Stress

  • Depression

  • Insomnia

  • Anxiety

  • Health issues

Work

  • Work/life balance

  • Conflict resolution

  • Interpersonal issues at work

  • Career path exploration

  • Change management

Life

  • Relationships

  • Parenting

  • Grief and bereavement

  • Significant life changes

  • Concerns about family members

When and how do employees access their EAP?

Like with many other mental health services, people choose to reach out for support in different ways and at different times. Some use their EAP proactively to manage ongoing wellbeing, while others are more likely to engage the service when in crisis or facing a particularly challenging time in their lives. Any level of engagement is ok.

Why use Life Matters as your EAP provider?

We’re a leading Newcastle-based mental health provider with a long, proven track record. Unlike most practices, we specialise in Workplace Wellbeing, working with many businesses – large and small – to understand the specific needs of their team and workplace to tailor a wellbeing program that suits their size and needs.
